2010 Winner of Last Comic Standing Felipe Esparza was coming to Corpus Christi. When I heard this, I asked the Booker and good friend John Roman if there was any way I could be part of the show. I'm a huge fan of Felipe's, and Corpus is not too far of a drive to do in one night. As it turns out, he had a night where I could open for 3 shows on a Saturday. You can believe this fat man jumped at the opportunity. The drive to corpus was uneventful, I made some calls, listened to some of Marc Marons; WTF podcast on my Zune. Made the trip fly by.
I got to meet Felipe and his Girlfriend Amy a little after I got to The Vent Comedy Club at Gators. Felipe is just how he is on stage, laid back easy going and really nice dude. The guy is a great performer too, the first 15 of all his hour long sets were both rapid fire one liners but at his trademark laid back pace. Some of his jokes, he kept tagging the hell out of them, Which I can appreciate. The first show was early, the sun was still out. Most of the room was full, and there was a sense of anticipation in the room. Like everyone knoew something amazing was going down. As far as for me, the first show went okay, I think I tried to work on too much new material. I learned my lesson from the first show and made sure to knock it out with sure fire hits in second show, where the room was absolutely packed. I always like performing at The Vent, I've performed there enough where I feel super comfortable on stage. The feature for the show as Dallas Comedian Carlos Codie, dude knocked it out of the park. This Brother knows MEXICANS. Throughout the whole night he had me cracking up. Im definitely looking forward to working with him again.
In between shows, I got to chill a bit Felipe and shot the shit a bit. He asked me where my favorite places to eat are, and other stuff about San Antonio. He had performed there years ago and was looking forward to coming back, which he is to my Home club the Laugh Out Loud. Hopefully Ill get another chance to work/ and hangout with Felipe. I opted not to host the third show, because it started after midnight, and was looking at a 3 hr drive home so I could teach Defensive Driving the next day. I instead just did a guest spot, said my good byes and took off in the cube.
Los Cody, John Roman, Me, and Felipe Esparza
